Lefkada is a Greek Ionian Sea island, located in close proximity to the continental part of the country. Hence, it is easily accessible by car as there is a 2km underwater tunnel connection. Lefkada is in-between the islands Corfu and Kefalonia. Kefalonia is actually really close so you go there for the day by a cruise ship from Lefkada, but if you are in Lefkada would you want to go somewhere else? Here are some of the top places you must see when in Lefkada.
Porto Katsiki beach (Πόρτο Κατσίκι or 'goat port') – should be on top of your list when visiting Lefkada Island. It’s amongst the 5 top Greek beaches and the name derives from the location as only goats were said to be able to reach this beach in the past. Porto Katsiki is around 35 km from Lefkada town and offers great diving and cliff jumping conditions. The water is crystal clear and calm as the beach is located in a cove.
Egremni – not far away from Porto Katsiki beach is Egremni. I have to say this this beach takes a special place in my heart. More so now after the earthquake of 2015 damaged the road leading to the beach and landslide covers a portion of the beach itself. Worry not! The beachline is still long and stunning! Prior to the earthquake, the beach could be accessed through around 350 steep steps from the actual car park, which is impossible now. The only way to reach Egremni is by boat, which may not be extremely bad news as the beach will be almost if not empty. However, I will miss the little tavern located by the car park as it offered some fantastic food and the incredible panoramic view below.
Waterfalls of Nydri - located in close proximity to the town of Lefkada, the beautiful waterfalls of Nydri are easily accessible by car. There's a parking facility and you just need to take a short 15 min walk through a green, fresh forest to get to the site. During the springtime there is more water, but it is worth the visit even in the summer as you can see below.
Agios Ioannis - Agios Ioannis beach is the closest beach to Lefkada town. Like most of the beaches on the island, Agios Ioannis has crystal clear water and beautiful landscape views. The beach of Agios Ioannis is quite windy and that makes it perfect for windsurfing and other water sports.
