Another one of my favorite Greek islands that deserve some more attention. Corfu has a lot to offer therefore the list of my favorite things we did there and what I think is a must do when on the green island.
Enjoy the capital city of Kerkyra - the main town of Corfu island, not only is the point that you'll most likely enter the premises of the island, no matter if you arriving by plane or ferry, but it's also an old and the very picturesque city that deserves some time to spend there. Walk around the little streets of the town, full of shops, cafes and taverns. Sit down to have a coffee or lunch, even dinner, the city is really beautiful at night during the high season, full of people and very much alive. Walking in the city and having a meal in any of the taverns is very romantic, this place is perfect for a trip with your significant other.
Have a beach tour of the island - as all of the Greek islands, especially the ones in the Ionian sea, there are many, many beaches that deserve a place in our list, some of them easily accessible, others require a boat trip, but still amazing a must do in any Greek island is to discover all of the hidden gems, in this case the beaches. You can check out our "guide" Top beaches of Corfu for more information.
Visit Achilleion (Sisi's palace) - situated high in the mountain in Gastouri, built by Austrian Consul Alexander von Warsberg for the Empress of Austria, Elisabeth of Bavaria, also known as Sisi. She was deeply saddened by the loss of her only son in 1889, and a year later she had that palace built. Nowadays it operates as a museum, it's a must see place in Corfu island for any tourist, not to mention it offers some amazing views.
Take a boat ride to the caves and the island of Paxos and Antipaxos - boat trip around the island is a must do thing in any Greek island. I have mentioned that on Top things do list, for like.... ever. Not only that you'll get the opportunity to visit the beaches that are not accessible by car, by you can also visit in the case the island of Paxos and Antipaxos. Also, there are trips from Kerkyra to Ksamil, a wonderful beach resort in Albania. You'll need several days just for that, can't all be done in one trip, you'll need at least two, so have that in mind when choosing the period of your stay.
Visit the old fortress in Kerkyra - a Venetian fortress in the city of Corfu, that covers the promontory which initially contained the old town of Corfu that had emerged during Byzantine times. There is now way you'll miss that while ejoying the sights of Kerkyra. I think there was an entrance fee in the Fortress, not quite sure though, but even if there is it will certainly be low fair.
Try kumquat fruit - the only place I've seen that delicious fruit so far, you probably haven't even heard about it, that's the number you reason you should try it. There is also a kumquat flavored ice cream which was also very, very nice, but I highly recommend trying the real fruit, and after that the ice cream.
