Iceland- the land of elves, trolls and stunning beauty. Falling in love with the country seems logical once your eyes soak the beauty that surrounds you, despite that the matters of the heart are more often than not illogical.
The memories from my last trip to the country are dreamy and carry some sort of deep emotional charge and resemblance to fairy-tale scenes. Hence, I have a strong motivation to manifest this explainable desire of mine and transform it into reality by planning to visit again soon.
It was with great sadness that I read the recent story of how tourists carved “Send Nudes” into a mossy hill, near Nesjavellir on the south part of the country. It is said that this “art” will take around 70 years before the moss regrows again that will hopefully serves as a message to the future generations and importance of preserving our natural habitat and the consequence involved when we fail to do so.
Going back to the very purpose of this article and without further ado, these are my top 7 reasons that explain my Icelandic romance and why you should visit too.
#1 Experience Freedom
Somehow the stunning landscapes make you feel really free and can instantly realease one from the “chains” of our urban lives.
#2 Hot Springs, Geysirs, dormant (and not so) volcanoes
As an avid sauna and spa enthusiast this land of geothermal activity and abundance provides to perfect conditions to satisfy even the most demanding when it comes to pampering oneself.
Another, official synonym for Iceland should be “the country of waterfalls” and for a reasons. Each different, when it comes to width, height, surrounding landscape and beautiful in a very own special and personal way. This of course presents a great opportunity for a couple of slow shutter speed photos.
#4 Give voice to your explorer-self
Iceland is the perfect place to release your inner explorer and adventurer. “A sitting crow starves” as one Icelandic proverb says. Indeed to make the most of your journey in Iceland and feed your soul with long-lasting memories then don’t be afraid to be curious.
#5 Aurora Borealis
Experiencing the northern lights is about as fairy-tale and magical a natural phenomenon can feel. After seeing Aurora Borealis for the first time it is likely that you may also start believing in elves, trolls and hidden people.
#6 Black Sand Beach - seeing trolls for the first time
The cliffs at site of Reynisdrangar are no-ordinary rocks. In fact, as the folk legend says, these are trolls that were pulling their ship to the shore, but were caught by the early dawn sunlight, which turned them into stone. The black sand beach and surrounding area is another marvel of Mother Nature that you can experience in Iceland.
#7 Horses and Puffins
It won’t take long before you see the Icelandic love for horses. In fact the country, has its own breed, but for the love of Odin do not call them ponies as local take great pride in the breed and this may be seen as an insult. The Puffin is also a national symbol. These cute little birds are skilled hunters and like the swans are monogamous.
